HELP! Magnet touched an N73 LCD...Any fixes or degaussing possible?

Hey,
Well I recently bought a Nokia 3250...and have to say I love it. And of course, I didn't want to get any scratches on it, so I also bought a case off ebay for it...its one of those magnetic flap cases. Yesterday one of my friends showed me their N73, which they protected with a similar magnetic flap case, and there were light marks on the LCD, which he said were caused by the magnetic case. So he decided to stop using it recently. I used my case for a few days, but now I've decided to hold off, and stick with a slip case for it. My 3250 still seems to be perfect, but I just thought I'd check here if theres anything he could do to fix this...or if this happens to one of my phones in the future, if there's any kind of fix for something like this....of course, I'm pretty sure replacing the LCD would do the job, but I don't think he wants to pay that much.

So is there any kind of degaussing possible for these phones? If not, is there any method that would solve this type of issue...or anyone in the GTA he could see that could fix something like this...for free or for a low price?

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Im not sure what your saying here. Are you saying the case scratched the screen? If so get a good abrasive polish and polish it out or get a new fasia. If your saying the magnet damaged the screen magnetically somehow then, no it wont have, something else will be wrong. I regularly keep my phone near a VERY powerful magnet at work, its never come to any harm. LCD screens are not affected by magnets in the same way CRTs are.

Hey,
Nope, wasn't talking about scratches...I was actually talking about the latter. So you're sure that magnets cannot do anything to phone LCD's? I'm almost positive that I've read about similar occurances before. If this is true, guess I can use my magnetic case again....but before I do, I'd like to hear any more opinions on the matter....but thanks a lot. I'll let my friend know too that it must be something else wrong...

Anyone know any more on the issue...or care to back up what rovex said? Thanks again!

Magnets do nothing to LCDs. In fact, I believe either Treo or Blackberry have screens that turn off when a magnet is near, with the idea being that you put your phone in a magnetic case and the screen would turn off, saving battery.

Yep, magnets should not effect LCD's at all. The reason they effected CRTs was that a CRT works by shooting a beam of electrons at phosphors on the screen, the electrons excite the phosphors and they (the phosphors) give off that extra energy as light. The beam of electrons is shot through the "tube" and steered onto the phosphors by magnets. An external magnetic field causes the electrons to veer from their intended course.

Now if the magnet were strong enough (most likely VERY strong) and it was moved in the correct direction at a high enough speed it could, theortically, induce enough of an electric current to blow some of transistors on an LCD. However that strong of a magnet would also mean you couldn't release it form the case without a prybar, so I doubt that is the case here.

Can you describe the marks more? single pixels or groups? Discolorations? Do they change as the screen changes or are the permenant?

Thanks for the replies guys...feeling fine using my magnetic case now. Anyways....guess I'll learn more about the concept mentioned above in my 3rd or 4th year of my Electrical Engineering studies lol...

As for describing the marks more....they were permanent, but were more visible when the phone was held at a certain angle. They were also in groups...a light blackish circle near the lower part of the screen, and a light curve slightly above the circle. The spots were darker in some areas, and lighter in others. I'll ask him if he can take a picture if its visible and send it over to me so I can show you guys what I mean...who knows, maybe its something that can be fixed pretty easily.

Thanks again!

Talking about scratches.. today I scratched my 42 inch Sony LCD TV the middle home theater speaker from the top of the TV fell .. on its way down the floor it left 5 deep scratches felt really bad. Searched on the internet for a easy solution. Some folks suggested to use vaseline petrolium jelly .. didn't work. Some other forums suggested to use pencil eraser! First though that it is wierd! Well gave it a shot. guess what? It totally removed all the 5 scratches! couldn't beleive myself for few seconds. Now cannot tell where the scratches were.. they are completely GONE.

I have to dissagree with you guys on the magnet issue. At my store we sell a leather case that has a very, very strong magnet in it. Now when I say strong I mean makes a pretty loud snapping sound when the flap comes down.

At first we were like sweet these will sell great...but for some reason I could not see how these could be good for a phone..battery..lcd..bluetooth...somehow I figured one of these would be affected.

Well lately we have been doing alot of exchanges for people who carry these cases. After a month the battery will be completely bad, recently on a w300i I had a customer who actually showed me that when someone called him and he pulled up the flap it would end the call...I tested it and he was telling the truth.

Also have had customers complain about the bluetooth reception when inside the case. ALso have had quite a few phones come back with screwed up exterior lcds. All different models too, not just the lowend phones.

In this situation I have to say the magnet is extremely effecting the quality of their handsets.

Well he took some pics, but nothing at all is visible from them...so yeah, guess I can't show you guys what it looks like...

Hmmm....I guess thats possible...but even if you squeeze an LCD screen...and I mean a BARE LCD screen such as a computer monitor or a television, the mark just goes away almost instantly. Of course, I don't mean squeeze and hold for a minute...as I've never tried that, but I'm pretty sure he's never done that with the phone. And on top of that, theres a full layer of casing above the phone's LCD, which is raised a little higher than the LCD itself...pretty tough to get down to the screen itself.

In the case of it actually being pressure marks, is there any way to get something like that fixed?

I was being somewhat sarcastic with the squeezing the screen comment, hence the smiley. It could happen if he were to lay/sit on the phone, etc. Who knows

I am not saying all magentic cases cause this same issue, but it is just something I personally stay away from because of these experiences. I am in the process of logging my instances involving these cases at work, I will be writing a few emails in a few weeks. Good luck.

Let me put it this way, i recently put my phone on top of a Subwoofer i was installing in my car. A 18inch Cerwin Vega sub. Its magnet is so powerful the field penetrates the car body and and tugs at my keys in my pocket if i stand against the car body. Its had no efect on the phone at all.

Asked him, he said hes never sat or done anything similar to it. He's still sticking to the "it was the magnet" routine....

I really have no clue what to do anymore....I guess the safest thing might just be to stick with the slipcase...although it doesn't look as nice as the magnetic case.

I guess the magnet shouldn't be the problem, but he told me he hasn't applied any kind of pressure to the screen either. Could applying a screen protector cause something like this...although I HIGHLY doubt it.

I have a Motorola I455,and bought a case.it has a magnet the size of about a quarter in the back part of the case.It says it is to turn the screen off on a blackberry.will that magnet hurt my phone?
Thanks

Nope. The phone itself contains magnets. You would have to put it against a magnet powerful enough to actually detach something from the circuit board or something, which would be incredibly powerful. You're fine.

That magnet is not very powerful, it is just there to emit its magnetic field. When you put a compatible phone in the case it detects the field and shuts the screen down to save battery, simply a way of the phone to know its in the case.

I kept my E70-2 in a magnetic case (designed for Blackberries) and the speaker went out on the E70.

I'm not sure if it was just a defect or a effect of the magnetic case but I never put my replacement back in

Speakers (most) contain magnets. It was just a defective speaker.
