my mother in law is addicted to pain killers, she has been in and out of treatments, has been admitted to the hospital, but manages to get out every time. She is at the ER right now, and I just left, she has been calling me while waiting to see the counselor (3-4 hour wait) and she wants to leave, I know they can't force her to stay, but is there anything else that I can say to her to that will help to convince her that she is making the right decision? I've told her to think of reasons why she wants to get better, told her if her son and I ever have children, that I wouldn't leave them with her unless she was clean, to get clean for herself, so she can function like she used to, my father in law just called me, and she wants to leave. she also suffers from paranoia schizophrenia, so her sitting in a waiting room full of sick people is not helping. any advice, any suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your problem. In reality, there is (usually) nothing you and say or do to convince someone to change their ways. They have to do it on their own and hit rock bottom or realize that they need help and want to do something about it. It has to come from inside them or they will not change their ways. They are the one who has to make the decision.

You can talk to her about how much better she would feel without the curtain of drugs pulled in front of her and how it would make the family feel if she stopped. You have to dig deep down and hit an emotion that will make her realize that it is the right thing to do. If you can get her to see a psychiatrist, possibly they may diagnose the real feelings that might be causing the problem.

It is difficult to look at someone and realize they are making a mistake and they just don't want help. Talk to her and try to make her understand that she is doing it not only for herself, but also for the rest of the family. Good Luck.
