Help for planning a pre (before a formal)!? Ideas?

I'm holding a pre for all my friends before out school formal and i'm looking for ANY IDEAS that people may have on food/drinks/atmosphere... all those sorts of things.
If anyone has been to a good pre in the past I'd love to hear about it and get some fantastic ideas!
