Help for an aspiring author?

I'm an aspiring author (in whatever sense that means) looking for help in the next step toward publication.

For the sake of this question, I have written a manuscript and edited it myself, and am wondering what the next step is.

I understand that (generally speaking) one must find an agent or something of the sort in order to help solicit my material. My question is quite simply:

What is the next step? Do I need to solicit an agent, and if so, how is that normally handled? What kind of things should I be looking at doing in order to achieve publication (or at the very least, solicit it)?

Any help is appreciated.

jk rowling didn't have money to get an agent..

so im pretty sure you wouldn't need one

be the annoying author that will do whatever it takes to get their manuscript in the hands of a publisher..

make phone calls,
write a few e-mails
i'm sure you will catch the attention of someone..

if not...then get an agent?

i hope this lightened your day! :)

Libraries have a book called "The Writer's market". It is a book filled with publishers from every genre.
My son takes an advanced writers course. He teacher is a published author. This is one of the books he keeps in his classroom and suggests his students use.
Good luck!

I should suggest Teen Ink as well. It's a magazine. They usually print short stories and poems but it might get you "out there" or give you a place to start.

Submit a few chapters and a summary of the rest of the story to a few publication houses. Start small; the bigger ones will let your manuscript sit if there's no big name or connections to go with it. Look to submitting a few chapters to magazines.
You can solicit an agent, but it is too early, really, at this juncture to try that route. Agents are looking to make money, a risky take for someone unpublished before.
