I read a book way back in the sixth grade, that was kind of "chick lit-ish". For some reason I think it had the word "river" in it the title, but I'm not sure.
The plot centered around a girl sent to private school where she befriends a chain-smoking loner type kid. A handful of jocks decide to screw with him, and they accidentally drown him in a toilet.
The girl feels kind of haunted by him after his death and... yeah I forget where the plot goes from there. It was 6+ years ago, and I just could use some help finding it.
