Help! DVD regions?

I'm trying to buy some DVD's online for xmas presents but I'm getting confused.

Some say region 1, others says region 2. Then there's region 3 and 4 . What are they talking about? :o

I'm in England with a regular DVD player that I bought from Currys. What region do I buy for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in danger of ruining Christmas here!

Just Buy Region 2 DVRAB. Anyone one of them should definately work on your DVD player. Also check the manual of your DVD player just in case and make sure it says it can play Region 2 DVRAB.

Check On the DVD movie back cover it should have a sign with a Number 2 and say either PAL or NTSC on it.

Mine is a recordable Philips DVDR70. I can't find the manual.

I bought it about 2 years ago.

I had a look at some of my DVD's. Most of them say 2 on the back so I'm going to play it safe and buy the region 2.

Why don't you see if there is an unlock code to make your DVD player multiregion. I have all 3 of my players unlocked to accept all regions and it only took about 10 secs to unlock each one.

I have found the manual and it says

" DVD's must be marked 'ALL' for all regions or'2' for region 2 to work in this machine. If the DVD is marked with a different region, it cannot be played in this DVD recorder.
The number within the globe represents the region. Region code 2 represents: Europe,Japan,South Africa,Middle East (incl.Egypt)"

I guess that means there is no point in me buying DVD's from USA then?

How do I find an unlock code?

Some one gave me some copied DVD's last week . They wouldn't play on the Philips but were fine on the cheapie player we have upstairs.

Thanks geraniums :)

I've put the page in favourites so OH can figure it out when he comes home.

I admit to being a complete dunce when it comes to all matters technology wise to THANK YOU to everyone for all your help :) Much appreciated.

I think you have to be careful as I believe NTSC will not work on all tvs, usually it says somewhere in the manual I think if it'll work or not on your tv.

NTSC will work on most TV sets in existance today, especially PAL ones due to them having more lines of resolution and higher refresh rate. Its actually NTSC sets that can't handle PAL picture format.

I have a Philips DVDR70 and made it multi-region from the day I got it with the remote hack from the site posted above. The only fault with the system is that after having it three years its started to play up outputting video to the TV. Doesn't matter what the source of video whether it be a DVD or the image from the tuner.

Does anyone know good places to buy region 1 dvRAB cheaply? Places like Amazon have some good value ones but then there's the risk of import taxes etc...
