Help! Dog barking in the car!?

So I'm at a loss. My 6 month old German Shepherd LOVES going for a ride. Yet when we get in the car he barks/whines? I'll run you through it.

In the house, I say "You wanna go for a ride??" And he responds enthusiastically. Gets alerted/excited, rushes to the door and lets me leash him up. When I get the front door open he doesn't even wait for me to get the screen door open too, he just barrels past it and rushes to our van/climbs in all by himself. But when we actually get in motion he barks a lot and between bouts of barking lays down in the seat and sometimes whines a little bit. The whining isn't too consistent, but the barking is almost constant and only stops if he puts his head out the window or he lays down. He doesn't wag his tail or look excited again. I'm having trouble reading what he's feeling which is odd, because I'm very close to him.

This wouldn't be so bad if he barked outside of the window, but he barks INSIDE the car and by the time we get to where we're going I'm miserable and in pain. He's six months now and has a big-dog voice.

Help! Why is he doing this? And what can I do to teach him that it's okay to bark SOMETIMES, just not in the car?
I always keep both front windows partially open when he's in the car.
