I lost a personal injury court case in December and was given a small amount of money to help pay the outstanding medical bills that Aetna refused to cover. Luckily the hospital where I went for Physical Therapy and other treatments wiped my account clean this year so now I don't owe that one hospital anything. Now the hospital where I had my surgery has some really high outstanding bills. I have been getting bills in the mail, but they've recently have stopped coming. I was also receiving several collection calls a day regarding the medical bills from the surgery hospital, but I've stopped receiving those too. My lawyer has tried for 9+ months to contact the surgery hospital to work out a payment plan to take care of the bill. They sent some forms for me to fill out, which I did, regarding my income, assets and proof of my hardships (unemployed for months, plus on welfare). We didn't hear back from them regarding the bill. My lawyer have called and called, with no answer back and he also sent several letters. He basically contacted them several times a month for the past 9 months with NO ANSWER.
Today I received an email from my lawyer about the insane fact that he didn't get any answer from his calls and letters this month and would like me to consider taking the rest of the money that has been left over from all the other bills. He told me that if I do decide to take the money that I will be on my own for the medical bills and it would be up to me to pay them or not pay them. He did mention that I could just have the bill paid off in full before he sends me the money. I rather not have anything go to them after the several attempts to settle the bill in the first place. It's obvious we've tried over & over again to settle the bill. At this point, there's not enough money to pay the bill in full and I cannot afford to pay anything out of pocket right now.
Can the hospital legally go after me for the outstanding bills Aetna refused to pay? I know if 7 years go by, it will be a wash.
