Help.. Confused at 28 days later ending

Just watched 28 Days Later on film4, and when the credits came on after the happy ending i went and put the kettle on, came back in and hes dying!! Then he dies and the girls walk off. Is it an alternative ending or something else? :confused:

If I remember rightly they added the alternate ending after the credits, anyway heres something I just looked up if it helps,


"Fox Searchlight attached an alternate downbeat ending to all 1,400 US prints of the film, while it was still in U.S. release. The revised ending was the one that appeared in the original script, but the script's ending was ditched in favor of a grimmer conclusion after it did not test well. Director Danny Boyle decided "We can't do this to people, because it was such a tough journey anyway." It's quite rare to change a movie's ending after it's been released to theaters"
