Help! Catholic Godparents debate!?

Help! My wife and I are having a debate. We will be baptizing our first child in a few months. The problem is, my best friend of 17 years is Christian and would like him to do the honer. My wife considers herself a "Traditional Catholic" and says that he wil not be able to be our childs Godfather. My argument is that he would be able to stand in as a Christian Witness. Her and her family practice the Catholic according to pre-Vatican II. Any help here? Plus any links to proof I am right or if she is?
 
OK this is ridiculous can't you all just get along? Followers of Christ are Followers of Christ no matter what denomination they are in. Look up Catholic in the Holy Bible. Oops sorry it's not there the same as all of the other man made denominations. If this man follows the belief of Christ than there is no reason he should not be allowed to be the godfather. I am not trying to be shrewed but she's being ridiculous on this one

You need to speak to your priest about that.......my Godfather was not Catholic, but he was baptized...this was pre-Vatican II
