Help: Canal or waterway featured in loads of American movies

You know the one - a long, straight dry canal in (I think) Los Angeles which has been used for car chases in numerous movies.

Where is it? What is it? Why does it always seem to only have a few inches of water running through it?

It's in L.A and apparently they haven't been able to use it since the mid 50's when mutant ants took up resident in the side tunnels

There's many of those canals in California. I thing the most filmed is the Los Angeles River.

Yep. And after the race, when all the T-BirRAB and Pink Ladies run through the water to get to Danny in Greased Lightning, the sewage/foul water that they ran through made a few of them ill.
