Help buying a new road bike?

I have been borrowing a friends bike for some time and now want to get my own road bike which I intend to race in the summer when I get fitter. So far I have been looking at a few bikes in the £1200 to £2000 price range but can't decide which to choose. At the lower price range I was looking at the Specialized Allez Comp or equivalent in other makes and at the higher end the Specialized Tarmac Comp or the Scott CR1 or equivalent.
Any suggestions about going high or lower end within the price range above and any other bikes I should consider would be appreciated

Most of the frames you mention would be fine, just go to a good cycle shop that deals in a selection of racing bikes. They should be able to fit you up with the correct size of frame for your height, fitness and flexibility. If you are going to race as you say, try and get the best wheels and gears you can afford as you'll notice the difference. Also, keep some money aside for clothing, shoes and other equipment you will require for racing and training. Hope that helps.

You're probably a lot younger and fitter than me, but on my cheep hybrid cycle I'm regularly keeping up with / overtaking people on advanced racing bikes, much to their annoyance, you'll need to buy serious locks and insurance for any bike in the price range you quote.
