help about a harley davidson?

my dads cycle is a 1979 Electra glide.
He recently have been having problems his Harley, it has been cutting out and spiting and spudering and it floods a bunch and his motor sounds like a hydraulic
can any one help
 
Sounds like needle and seat. Rebuild the carb, and drain and refill the tank

then ride it like you stole it
 
First of all, I am a qualified motorcycle mechanic; ( I have owned 13 H-Ds, plus I graduated from American Motorcycle Institute ). The two most PROBABLE causes for his problem, is : Carb. malfunctioning, &/ or valve push-rod/s out of adjustment. NEXT thing is possibly; Bad valve ! If it is "spitting" back out of the carb., then it is an intake valve, or adjustment ! Spitting out of the tail-pipe; Exhaust valve ! NOTE; When setting valve adjustments, the engine must be "cold" ! 1979; Good year for H-D ! First year of the new, and improved oil pump ! If I can help further, E-mail me . Rex
 
A buddy of mine had the same issue a few weeks ago. To fix it he poured a bottle of carb/fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. It still ran rough for a few days but after that the problem was fixed.
 
fuel delivery problem,pull the carb and clean it out,the stock carb is simple and straight forward to do.
although this has nothing to do with the symptoms that you described,check the fuel filter at the same time,unsrew it from the bottom of the tank(fuel petcock)again,it's very straight forward
 
Pull the float bowl off, clean out the needle and seat, but if I would have to guess whats wrong, I would check the advance unit. Take off the points cover, mark the points plate so you can put it back where it came from, take the points plate off, and underneath is the advance unit. It will have a couple weights and springs on it, probably loose and falling apart. Replace the whole unit, or even better replace the ignition with one with electronic advance rates, so you dont have to change the advance unit every year! When these advance units go out, the bike will pop, sputter, spit, and blow fireballs out the drag pipes. It is a weak spot in the Harley ignition, I would recommend replacing the whole ignition for an adjustable curve single or dual fire one.
