help 1990 honda accord lx cranks but wont start.?

after driving or while my car would be sitting and idling at a traffic light or something. i could smell fuel in the air. i would drive with i windows down so i would smell a strong fuel odor coming from my car. so i suspected there was something going on with the fuel system. maybe a leak or something. and i got home from work the other day. parked the car and left it there. later that night i was going to move the car. but then i would just keep cracking but wouldnt start. kept trying a few more times but nothing. just keeps cranking n wont start. i dont know what it could be? if i need to try replacing the main relay or the ignitor or coil. or the fuel pump. i check for that whirrling noise the hear whenever u turn the key to the on position. but now i dont seem to be hearing it anymore. could this have something to do with my starting problem?? plz help
