Hello newbie here!!!!

Hi all, I am new and wanted to say howdy. I currently have a HTC hero and love it. I am looking for ways to make it better. Just want to streamline its operation and make it more efficient with processor and battery. I have had the for for 3-4 months and am starting to get a little more comfortable with it and willing to try some diffrent things. Running v 2.1 on the phone.

I have heard that if I get rid of my ATK that will help a lot. But what about all the apps that it show running? Wont they slow everything down and drain the bat? Is there a difference when you put a widget vs a program on a home screen? I am sure that much of this is old and beat to death but if some one can point me in a direction it would be very welcome.

Hello, ffpmme, I can't answer any of your questions but I thought I would say hi since I am also a newbie, a stone cold newbie. My Droid X is the first smart phone I've owned and I have to say, I'm struggling. So many things just do NOT make sense, or else I haven't figured out how to use them properly. I'm hoping all the experience in the forums will help me to figure out some things. I hope someone pops in with some answers for you!
Best, Sunfish

Hi there. If you're willing root your Hero, there are several things that may help: a custom ROM, and apps that function better than a task killer (scheduled task killing isn't recommended), such as autokiller and autostarts. There may still be Hero users here, but try Googling around for information.

Thanks Sun, hopefully we can learn a lot from everybody.

Thanks Desert!!! I have heard about that and my neighbor who had a G1 did it and he loved it. I am not really sure I understand the concept well enough to do it. I removed the ATK based off of several recommendations and I read Lazy Genius's thing about rooting. But I am 1) scared to turn it into a brick, 2) not sure of the benfit or what some of the stuff you are talking about, custom ROM, means to me.

Some hero users left? I am guessing that this phone is not very popular or well thought of?

hello im new with android.i got a mytouch 3g slide.i was wondering how to i transfer apps, pictures, videos and etc... to sd card.the phone itself doesnt really have that much space.i want it to go on sd card..pls help me

Plug the USB cable into your phone and to your desktop. Drag your status bar down from the top and you should see USB connected, tap it and follow the directions. Should be a folder DCIM(pictures), MUSIC, just drag and drop files into those folders. If they don't exist just create them. As for apps on your sd card you will need to root your phone until your phone gets froyo.

As far as rooting goes, if you follow directions you should be ok. The benefits are basically complete control over your phone. A "ROM" is a customized flavor of the Android operating system that someone has built. They are often optimized beyond what your cell carrier puts on the phone. As for the Hero, it's just a bit old now, and many users have gotten a newer device. Try Googling "root Sprint Hero" and see what you find.

Hi dude, didn't sound a promising start getting that message from deserttopping eh? Might be a few hero users here, I understood there were thousands of us, maybe he knows something we dont. I've also got the hero running 2.1. It's a debatable subject, task killers but I use Fast reboot with no problems. Apparently some apps dont automatically restart but all mine do and the phone goes from sluggish to fast again. It also helps battery life by killing the apps until you call them up again. Also disable location bod and WiFi when you are not using them. Finally I'm not rooted, dont really know what it means, involves or is it any real benefit to me. Good luck from the hundreds of thousand hero users worldwide. Ziggy.

The post from desert was good. Did not take it personally. I know it is "old" technology, but for right now it is great. I want a new phone and I will get it. But I love it and I want to know if I can make it better.

I never have the wifi on and I only have the gps on when I call them up. I have gone through my system analysis and it appears that I do not have to much running. My internal mem stays at about 30% used, ram @ 24-26% used when nothing is running. Is there a way to set things that will start upon command or upon start up? Kinda like a windows task manager? Maybe I am running leaner then I think I am.

With the ROM builds, if some one else builds it how do I know I will like it? If I dont can I get a different build easily? Also I have been told to not do this with out having the insurance, in case I turn it into a brick. But my thought if I did brick it, it would be void anyway because I am messing with the OS? I guess I am not sure of the benefit I will see with a root.

Fianlly, does anybody have a Archos 5 or 7? I was thinking of getting one with Droid and replacing my broke MP 3 Player. Is it worth it or no? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Kill the task killer that's what is running in the background. Free memory is wasted memory in a android.

Memory in a phone is a little different. On a phone your most used apps are stored in memory so that when you hit the launcher that app opens immediately. When a taskkiller shuts apps down when you select that app your phone has to restart the whole thing. Your OS is programmed to shut down apps if it needs more memory. Having a 160 mb of memory to run a 32mb app is not going to help anything. Don't sweat it man, I had to learn how these phones work too. A good app to install is Android System Info. It is the only system app i use. It does have a manual taskkiller if you want to kill a task your not going to use for the rest of the day. I use it for shutting down my music player and stuff like that. Remember android os is is kinda working on a suspend to ram type of format. Although the app is sitting in memory it is not really consuming any CPU recources.

ok that app is the one I used to replace my ATK. Not to shut stuff down but to be able to keep any eye on how things are running. What I have found is 1 my battery seams to go faster. But maybe that is because I keep checking it to see how it doing.

Upon re-evaulating I have 17-22%of RAM available. So I guess I did not have as much free as I thought.

Thanks for the help! I am learning all the time with this phone
