Hellboy 2: The Golden Army - "Highly Recommended"

Good to look at but was disappointed in it overall, first one was a lot better.

The fact they telegraphed how the film would end almost at the start really spoilt it for me.

Soon as you see that the brother bleed as he cuts the sisters face it was clear she was going to die and in doing so kill the bad guy. Just spent the next two hours waiting for it to happen.

I enjoyed it quite a lot, especially the visuals which were brilliant.

However, in terms of your comment in spoilers, I agree completely but would go further even to say
that was an enormous hole in the plot - if she was prepared to kill herself to prevent her brother raising up the golden army then why didn't she just do that at the beginning (other than of course that would have meant that the film would have been five minutes long).

The whole film fell apart for me when that happened, not only did it mean that the film was basically pointless because in the end the resolution could have been reached in the first five minutes but it also made certain parts of the film pointless including the threats he made against his sister in order to get Abe to bring him the final bit of the crown. I had dared to hope that the reason this hadn't been covered earlier was because they would find a way of finishing off Luke Goss without killing her and felt very badly let down as a result.

That said, I'd recommend people to see it if only for the monsters that have been created for this, the effect of which would only be felt on the big screen, particularly the
forest elemental which was spectacular

SounRAB kind of bad saying I'm glad it wasn't just me that had the film spoilt by certain things, but you hopefully get what I mean :)

I was chatting to a mate in the pub before about this did anyone else see Selma blairs bulge , ???
I noticed it but blanked it out in 2 shots shes in hot pants an she got a Package bulge there ,lol
I just gone online an found some pap shots of her in a bikini an thank the lord she is not a he/she ,lol

maybe it was a mic ..lol

The thing that annoyed me was the fact that the german gas fellow could possess things, so why didn't he just:

possess the crown and break it into pieces, or stop it from working or fly it onto Hellboys head or something?

Great film, sure there are lots of plot holes but for me that didn't matter.

One thing I did come away feeling - what a shame they killed off John Hurt's character in the 1st film - it definitely left a gap by not having him there.

8/10

went to see it last night, i enjoyed it, the troll market was amazing. brilliant creatures everywhere. And the time they spent on Abes character is great. Ill never hear a barry Manilow song the same after it somehow though. hehehe!!
To me, dont look to deep it just a big barrel of fun this time. I think with the first one they tried to get deep and emotional in parts and it didnt work. They left that bit aside this time.

Do you think they will do a third? I hope so.

I'm pretty sure there will be a 3rd by the way the film ended:

I think there will be 2 mini Hellboy cross fire woman additions to it

I was a bit disappointed in this film too, but then I didn't watch the first one, so maybe Hellboy's just not my cup of tea.

One thing I did wonder, how come David Hyde Pierce didn't reprise his role as the voice of Abe Sapien? Did he not want to do it or wasn't he asked?

I assume it must be the former since they were pretty good at getting back all of the original cast for the main roles.

The first film was supposed to have Doug Jones (who plays Abe) own voice but the studio didn't like it and wanted someone with more of a name so told del Toro to hire Hyde Pierce. Hyde Pierce refused to promote the fact that he was the voice of Abe because he himself thought it should be Doug Jones. Needless to say, del Toro got his own way in Hellboy 2, but it was still a mutual decision with Hyde Pierce.

A couple of similarities to Terry Pratchett books:

Elves and associated magical creatures who project an image for humans to see using 'glamour' - LorRAB & Ladies.

A Golden Army controlled by one person and that can destroy the world - Making Money (they were Golums made of gold admittedly).

Very strange coincidence.

Gotta watch it again, tbh... I preferred the first one; it was more like the comics. I want Hellboy punching out Nazis. Or taking on Cthulhu (PLEASE let that be the third movie!)

Aside from my personal preferences, though, it was great. Perlman was still perfect for Hellboy, del Toro's not only a great director but a huge fan of the comics, and you can tell. And with Mignola on board, it couldn't EVER be bad.

Hellboy III

A third movie is in the conception stages, set to focus on the combat between Hellboy and a brainwashed Archangel that had been held captive by Nazis since World War II. There will also be the return of Rasputin and Kroenen, and the debut of Roderick Zinco. New B.P.R.D Agents include Lobster Johnson and possibly Roger the Homunculus. The prophecy of Hellboy becoming the Beast of the Apocalypse will be fulfilled, and additionally, Hellboy will have to learn to be a father to twins. Del Toro's commitments to the Hobbit films will delay any potential involvement in the project.

From "all you can edit wiki" but still..........
