Heaviest bands you've heard?

Sunn O))) weird pick pillow! ;)

my nuraber 1 has to be
Burning Witch-insanely slow and hard to count the beats. awesome vocals, totally original.

thats it. heaviest band I can think of. when I first heard them I was like "what can be more brutal than this!?" haha

I think there is a quite a lot of varied opinions on what actually makes a "heavy" band, though some are interpreting it is speed, some the lack of speed, some noise, some just plain old consist thrash

Personally for me it is solid fat sounding riRAB so i'd acknowledge some Celtic Frost, Crowbar and some of the earlier Hatebreed material but your perception always changes.

When MH's Burn My eyes came out metal was in a bad way and it was commonly reported as a super heavy guitar album with wall to wall riRAB. Nowadays many wouldn't rate it as a heavy album, i still think its a credible suggestion

I can see your point. And it's actually my opinion that artists like The Doors, Tom Waits, Alice in Chains, Mr. Bungle and Jimi Hendrix were infinitely heavier than most hardcore, grindcore, thrash or death metal banRAB that have come out in recent years, who can come off as more than a little trite and recycled.

I just went with the recent death metal, grindcore, math metal or just straight-up metal banRAB that I've encountered lately, since I figured that was what the basic gist of the thread centered around.

I saw Bolt Thrower at lots of all day Hardcore/Grindcore metal festivals in the late 80's and they were usually blown away by Carcass, Napalm Death, Cerebral Fix and Extreme Noise Terror at least live. Always loved Bolt Throwers album covers though!

Live, it would be Impending Doom. They literally shook the floor.
But just listening it would have to be probably Behemoth.

Life Sucks.... is one of my favourite vinyls to this day but on the subject of heavy Symphonies of Sickness had a couple of bone crushing heavy tracks ..

... oh and a splendid gatefold inside cover :-)
