Heath Ledger - The Joker - Best Performance in a Batman Movie?

When I first heard Ledger was going to be The Joker I thought 'eh?!' - it didn't seem to fit at all.

What he turned out was a brilliant, complete performance. He was completely unrecognisable as Ledger and totally different from any of his other film roles.

What I think he did best was that he did seem genuinely unhinged and made the character incredibly unsettling. The video taped scene with the fake Batman really makes me crawl every time. He's just so 'wrong'. At the same time though he portrayed the dangerous intelligence that made him a good adversary.

Personally I think TDK is an excellent film as it is. I love it for it's complicated plot and certainly don't think there's anything you could cut from its running time without really losing something important.

Ledger's performance as the Joker in my opinion was outstanding and I wouldn't complain if he won an Oscar.
What does annoy me though is all these Ledger fanboys/girls saying that he can never be replaced as it would be disrespectful to cast the role again for the third film. Are they telling me there isn't an actor alive out there who could not do a similar job as Heath did? That's total BS.

I hope Nolan does recast the Joker for the third film as he is an integral part of Nolan's original plans for the story, and I think with Nolan the most important thing is the story.

i think its more the loss of potential when younger actors die

and i think ledgar showed he had turned that potential into a star performances by the time he had died with bb mountain & dark knight..well imo anyway

everyone can debate wether its down to sympathy or not, but in the end it doesnt matter, you know if you think he deserved it or not

and in 2008 i cant think of a better performance

p.s tropic thunder was dire,if its comedy give it to jason segal for forgetting sarah marshall(or was that 2007 lol)

i agree the story is most important mate but my only reservation is that ledger played a rebooted joker in a rebooted franchise, that helped him take over(brilliantly) from nicholson, but now any new actor is going to have to portray the same joker character in the same universe,i think its gonna be so much harder

im really gonna miss ledgars dark joker with the lip razor biting etc but i would like to see the joker return in a new film.

What? The Departed? One of his poorer films?

Have you seen The Aviator (yawnworthy bollocks) or Gangs Of New York (the worst film I have ever seen)?

I loved The Departed - especially Mark Wahlberg. He completely stole the show.

It showed that Scorcese still had it if he tried.

Yeah, but I didn't rate him until I saw The Dark Knight. Before that, I thought he was just an average actor. TDK showed his true potential, or rather the loss of what might have been.

To be honest, in Brokeback Mountain, I thought he was terrible. I had to turn the volume up every time he spoke - the mumbling idiot. :D

You can't really compare the Joker from Burton's film and the Joker from Nolan's. Apart from the name, they're written as almost completely different characters and are played as such. I don't think it's a case of either actor being "better" than the other.

I thought Ledger's performence was brilliant, but still just a touch overrated. My favourite performences in the Bat-franchises come from Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, and Michelle Pfeiffer.

well Michael Keaton made a very good Batman and put in some very good performances as did Michelle Pfieffer as catwoman.

Christian Bale has probably done a better job as Batman than Ledger did as the Joker.

Ledger was really good but there wasn't very much range to his performance

I thought he was average to be honest and so was the film, Batman begins was superb, but i really felt let down by this one. Way to long and just didn't feel right.

Sorry just my opinion.
