Heater not working properly in 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport?

It is -5 outside and my heater never seems to warm up. I can leave my jeep running for 30 minutes and it still seems to blow out only luke warm air. Any suggestions? Thanks.
The temp gauge does get to about the middle of the scale. I was under the impression the thermostat was for keeping the engine cool. Was this a misconception?
 
you probably need to replace your thermostat, and while your at it, flush the coolant out and replace it too.
