Heartbeat (1992 - 2010)

Never a fan of the programme and personally think it went on well longer than it should've done. Nonetheless, it deserved better treatment from ITV than this.
Can't they at least wrap it all up by showing one more episode to tie up all the loose ends and give it a proper send-off like they did A Touch of Frost and The Bill?

I enjoyed tonights swan song.

It actually seemed like one of the better plots of recent years.

Being a DW fan I would've liked them to have done some alternate endings.

1. Oscar wakes up in a modern day hospital and the whole series turns out to be dream.

2. Oscar passes away, releasing the village from a time loop that's kept them trapped in the 60's for 18 years.

On a more serious note I would've liked some past characters to have returned, Bradley, Vernon, Rowan and the like.

So are there really episodes of The Royal yet to be broadcast? If so how many?

Looking at the TV ratings it was the second most watched programme of the night. Averaging just 5.58m, which was 30,000 less than A Concert For Heroes that was on BBC one at the same time. It was the most watched programme on ITV1 on Sunday too.

Lol! Love those first two ideas! Seriously though, yet again it seems to be a case of ITV know better than the viewer, so we have to lose yet another programme. We've lost Heartbeat and The Bill in the last couple of weeks, two of my favourites that i've watched since they began. And now ITV are going to subject us to an extra episode if X Factor on a Sunday, and no doubt a month of I'm A Non-Entity...Joy!

I think they should keep Heartbeat going but say just 10 - 12 episodes a year. Perhaps in a 90 minute format. It's still a popular show, always in the top 10, usually in the top 5 viewing figures. I bet the repeats on ITV3 are doing well too.

I remember when Noels House Party (not everyones cup of tea) finished/was axed because audience figures dropped to around 7 - 9 million. But now (and Edmonds mentioned this) that would be classed as brilliant figures.

Eastenders and Corrie used to be up in 12 - 14 million just a few years back. I suppose with all the technology, iplayer and such it's easier for people to watch programmes when it's convenient to them, not when it's first broadcast.

I digress, Heartbeat should continue. I agree with others that talking over the end credits was a disgrace.

I think the ITV HD figures bumped it up a little and it was only marginally behind the concert.

(Yes, up to 5.72 million as noted in my post earlier when including the ITV 1 HD simulcast figures).

This series has been very consistent.

In contrast ITVs new 'hit' reality show - 71 Degrees North (the sort of thing they will be replacing Heartbeat with to save money) got just over 3 million last night.

Sorry but I do not get how anyone who plans these decisions earns their salary.

I agree with everything you say there. How do they get the figures today, what with iplayer, ITV player, Sky+ etc...Yes, Heartbeat should continue, and yes, talking over the credits was a disgrace tonight, for a drama that's kept them well for the last 18 years!

Also, ITV demolished the indoor sets at the Leeds studios in double-quick time so the possibility of any more episodes is unfortunately now probably nil.

Every series has it's sell by date. When most of the orginal actors have moved on for what ever reason then a programme becomes a shadow of it's former self. Heartbeat has had a good innings compared to the majority of TV series, lets leave it at that and move on!

Yeah, it's not my cup of tea, but compared to most of ITV1s output, it's like Shakespeare. I also feel sorry for older viewers who like programmes such as Last of the Summer Wine, the Royal and Heartbeat but are are not being catered for.

If the future is dross like 'Two pints of lager..." and reality cr*p then no wonder channels like ITV3, ITV4 and BBC4 showing stuff from the 60s,70s and 80s are so popular.
