Heartbeat (1992 - 2010)

Everything in life has an end (well, except Coronation and Eastenders;) ) and ultimately you reach a point where things just naturally run their course.

The main problem with TV right now is a complete dirth of creativity - That mainfests itself in the over reliance on trash TV and game shows, but it also manifests itself in shows that have clearly run their course but never, ever seem to end.

I'm all for getting rid of shows like Heartbeat and The Bill if it means new drama will be commisioned. We'll find out in due course if thats what ITV intends doing. In the meantime the BBC should follow ITV's lead and get rid of Casualty and Holby.;)
 
We'll only be able to judge the changes ITV are making in the next year. Just because they aren't filling the Heartbeat slot with anything good or original next week, doesn't mean in time they won't.

Heres hoping right now they are commisioning something really good to take Heartbeats place.:)
 
Or even if they had one final scene after raising a toast to Oscar in the pub, that they showed Oscar lying in the hospital bed and then zoom on to the pulse monitor as the reading changes to a flat line and then the credits rolled would be some fair conclusion.

But no, they had to leave us on a pointless cliffhanger.
 
It was good in the early day, but it became too formulamatic

Someone turns up in the village > Someone dies > Cop solve murder

Then they just throw some 1960's music in
 
A great programm and sad it has finished also so many loose ends need tieing up so hopefully it can be brought back for 1 final episode to dinisht it properly not likly though
 
If TXF continues with Saturdays and Sundays then its gonna get interesting in the TV ratings as from October the BBC are showing SCD on Saturdays and Sundays at the same time by the sound of things.

No wonder that idiot Cowell is up in arms with the BBC, lol!

I reckon ITV will gain viewers as you say from TXF but the older audience are going to move elsewhere on Sunday nights as there isn't anything appealing to them.
 
I did too. Thought Oh dear, Someone's not going to make the end of th series, but hopefully Oscar's not ready to go yet. Alf said he would go when he was ready. My other half just said 'BOOM BOOM' when he saw Oscar with the fork and the blue face.
 
18 years is a good innings for any series. As others have said it
became too predictable and when that happens it's better to call it a day.:sleep:
 
Bernie has looked almost the same age for about 15 years. Hard to believe the actor's nearly 70.

My favourite funny character will always be Vernon. The bane of Bernie;s life! lol I've got lots of Vernon scenes on DVD that I collected over the years when I taped the programme on video and transferred them to DVD, Always good for a laugh.

And the episode when Daniel was born and died I still have. Always makes me cry, cos it never occurred to me the baby would die, even though I knew they only had GIna pregnant cos Tricia was, so it was a shock, and so sad when they killed him off!
 
Heartbeat was always supposed to be a vaguely authentic Drama, rather than a Fantasy/Sci-Fi show, so its credibility was seriously dented when they decided to spend a decade in 1969 with Oscar and Gina ageing rapidly. "The Village That Time Forgot" is a story best suited to a series like Doctor Who.
 
Why get rid of something that's still popular, though? Despite dreadful treatment from ITV, it's still had high viewing figures. The Bill was dropped because of its sharp audience drop and the budget from that alone could be used for new drama. We all know that we can expect some new reality or quiz show instead though. ITV doesn't do quality new drama any more.
 
The music and scenery are what make Heartbeat so great for me, even though I was born decades later and have never been in the area. It's perfect Sunday-night viewing and something the whole family can enjoy.
