I have to answer an AP question reading, "Novels and Plays often depict characters caught between colliding cultures- national, regional, ethnic, religious, institutional. Such collisions can call a character's sense of identity into question. Select a novel or play in which a character responds to such a cultural collision. Then write a well-organized essay in which you described the character's response and explain its relevance to the work as a whole.

I read Heart of Darkness by Conrad for my book. I THINK that I should use the African savages and the civilized European people as my contrasting cultures, but i'm not 100% sure. I'm not sure if Marlow or Kurtz could be contrasted with the mindless company there as a whole. The main problem I have with the savages vs. civilized part is how it's relevant to the work as a whole in a way other than just being part of the book. Also I can't think of many examples of Marlow reacting to it other than the quote about them being "inhuman". ANY help is much appreciated. Thanks :)
