Everyone should applaud the insurance lobby. They have done an excellent job of convincing the public that insurance companies are not out just for profit, competition will drive down prices, they have a very small margin of profit, outragous judgements drive up cost ect and so on.
Go to any insurance companies website and read their mission statement, in this statement they wil say they are for profit. Investors would not buy there stock if they wasn't. Insurance companies tell doctors how much they will pay. In many areas no more than 3 companies control the local market. So if you don't accept their fee schedule you will find yourself not making much money.
Insurance companies will never compete on price, there is no need. Basically I own an insurance company I will be cheaper for some people while more expensive for others. I want to maximize profits, this way investors will buy my stock which in turn will give me more money to buy up my competition. The less competition the more I can charge. why is gm and chrysler reducing dealerships? answer, to reduce competition. Now for some reason many are under the impression that competition will fix the health care industry. Do some research and you will find there are less insurers today than 30 years ago. Through mergers and aquistions competition has been reduced. I would hate to think how many companies make blue jeans, there is competion in the blue jean market. Some name brands will cost much more. But for the most part they all do the same thing. My costs are very fixed with insurance they are not, so any cost that can be eliminated should be as it will add to the bottom line which once again results in higher dividends to shareholders. If a CEO fails to make this happen another one will then investers will move their money elsewhere.
If people woud actually research things themselves they would quickly find, the majority of new intovations in medicine have not come from large for profit companies, but from the National institute of health, and many of are universities, and small biotech firms.
No one with common sense believes, universal health will not have costs. If one looks at the amount spent in this country today per capita for medical care, then compare that number to the rest of the world then look at the profits made by drug companies, insurance companies and investment groups that own many hospitals and clinics. That are constantly cutting cost by offering less services for more money. This is how for profit business works. Health care providers should compensated well for their services. Medical school is expensive but you will find doctors pay off these huge loans faster than anyother profession.
The best system to make health care available to everyone is a one payer system. if we took what was paid out last year for medical care in this country, and put all the money in one account then paid out all the medical care used last year, all the prescriptions paid. there would still be billions of dollars left over to support more research, hire more health care providers, and promote healthy living.
THX - You are correct Obama's plan sadly is nothing like this. To many polititians are terrified of the insurance companies. The day a one payer system is put in place the power of insurance lobbyist will be greatly diminished. In 1990 Taiwan switched to a one payer system, and they are very happy. There is a large number in this country that fear anything that is social in nature. One thing that made this country great is we took the best from the rest of the world and made it even better. To think we cannot look at the rest of the world take the universal health plans offered in every industrialized nation but ours, and improve it that so no person loses everything they have worked for because they got sick. Just think how many new businesses would be started if people did not have such a fear of losing medical coverage for themselves and their families.

wow some people are buying hook line and sinker they have a choice with insurance companies. All tests must be appoved by insurance companies, all procedures must be approved, the list goes on and on. If you do not believe me go to the doctor and tell him you want an MRI done. You will have to wait for insurance approval unless you have a couple thousand to pay out of pocket. Some people keep yelling "I don't want the government controlling my health care" I guess they need to be saying " I want my health care controlled by a company that will do everything they can to deny me coverage in order to maximize profits" You forgot to mention on your insurance application a visit to the doctor for something as trivial as athletes foot, they can and will refuse to cover an illness that is totally unrelated. Your doctor runs a cat scan finds something he feels is not important and doesn't tell you, the insurance company finds it they will deny your claims.
