It is a bad idea. There is competition in the health insurance industry. There is competition in the health care industry.

The US government cannot run anything properly. Government is the problem, not the solution. We have way too much government interference already. It increases the cost of health care by as much as 40%.

There is no doubt in my mind that health care needs reform. But letting the government provide health care is just asking for trouble. The quality will go down, people will be disgruntled, doctors will leave their field and in general chaos will reign. Quality will decline to the lowest common denominator and people will die from stupidity and bureaucracy.
