Head set communication

I am interested in a chatterbox system or whatever they are called. I dont know much about them, every time I look it is complicated. The understanding that i have is you install the system, then it coordinates to the headset through a motorola walkie-talkie? A few of us want to purchase them to talk while we are ridding. Can someone give me some advice on these systems, how they work, cost, best product?
 
I have had a couple of different ones, the Autocomm, which i had nothing but trouble with and it never worked properly..and then another from NZ that i bought... it wasn't much better so i give up on them... in saying that, i know a lot of guys who have them working fine, some of the newer ones work on bluetooth, not sure if they're much better...
 
I have a chatterbox, but my friends never bought one so I can only comment on the rider to passenger communication and the music functionality.
The rider to passenger communication works well (use it when I ride my honda with my wife). You install the chatterbox device on your helmet (fairly unobtrusive). You install the earphones and mic in your helmet and the passengers helmet. Hook them both up (plenty of wire for the passenger) and you are good to go.
You have two options for communication, the voice operated choice works pretty well (even better if you make some type of noise to open the mic, then start talking), or you can install a push to talk button on you handlebar.
There is also an input for music which the rider and passenger can hear, and cuts out when you start talking.
 
Thanx guys! So oz you said ur previous ones just sucked, jon you only used it with ur passanger. Hopefully someone has been succesful with ride to rider communication?
 
the system from nz is at www.amalgamate2000.com/sales/motorcycle_communications.htm i have had mine for a number of years and went through a few radios.true oz, always had dramas, but the rest of us didnt[docnsw],might be the operator!!!. best advice is go for a 5watt handheld type radio [i use a GME TX6200 but there is also UNIDEN model.and not smaller 2w types,as the range tends to decrease considerably and be not as clear.the GME also has a short antennae that unscews,allowing you to fit the radio inside say a tankbag and run a cable to a rear external mount on your bike for a floppy 12inch/30cm antennae. with regard nz system,modified the press to talk button to run off the headlight flash switch /button.neater and thus not mounted on handgrip which was a bit annoying.hj
 
i have a couple chatterbox, not real impressed, i have done rider to rider but if your going over 40 or so it picks up too much wind noise, i mostly use it now to listen to my mp3 player through and when my wife rides on the back it does ok, nothing real impressive, i got them a couple years ago i heard they came out with a new one that is suppose to be better
