I wonder if there have been any changes to Bell ExpressVu's PBS HD service lately.

I noticed that transponder 26 on Nimiq 2 has four HD channels on it: PBS East, PBS West, A&E and Rush. Presumably, whatever you may think of these broadcast/specialty services, each of them is delivering genuine 720p or 1080i signals to Bell. It seems to hard to imagine with MPEG-2 they can squeeze four channels into the same bandwidth they normally provide for two HD channels.

What happens in prime time? I think it's fair to assume that, even those broadcasters whose source material isn't HD 24/7, they still pump out a full set of HD pixels 24/7.

Since Bell ExpressVu is now putting three HD channels on several transponders, I wondered if, perhaps, they have actually dropped PBS East, for example, and are only delivering PBS West. While PBS has only one national HD feed, both Boston and Seattle do offer variations on programming at other times of day. Has this been dropped?

Or are they still providing all four channels and really compressing them a huge a amount? According to the website, Bell continues to deliver PBS East and PBS West in HD claiming them as two distinct services.

We are paying for HD lite:

811 Rush HD RUSH 126 12.5885 Nimiq 2 (82) HDTV AC-3
813 A & E HD A&EHD 126 12.5885 Nimiq 2 (82) HDTV AC-3
819 PBS - East HD PBSHE 126 12.5885 Nimiq 2 (82) HDTV AC-3
824 PBS - West HD PBSHW 126 12.5885 Nimiq 2 (82) HDTV AC-3

You are correct, PBS HD East has been missing for about a week now. We are getting PBS HD West (KCTS hd Seattle) on both east and west hd feeds. I would assume this was done to save bandwidth.

The loss in pq is noticeable with 3 hd channels on one transponder. I'm ready for a change in providers.

There is no need for PBS east & west anyways. Its the same stuff. Bev just wants the hd lineup in the guide to look bigger with all the mirrored channels and of air sport channels heh

It was a good move to drop one of the PBS hd feeds. I just wish they would have kept the Eastern feed as the Seattle feed has a rather large and bright bug.

They may be keeping Seatle PBS as some of their local shows are in HD. Not sure that the Boston channel does any local programing in HD.

I changed for that very reason ... that and bell techs saying that 3 tps was just for mlb ei hd, nothing else. So the lie and disrespect sped up the process.

The official Express Vu site is here;

Remove the space in the word B ell.

It's a farce for BEV to pretend that they are still providing PBS HD East and West when it's just KCTS/Seattle on 819 and 824. There are many instances where the program guide for PBSHE is wrong.

I don't disagree with the decision to drop one of PBS HD feeds now, since there was very little difference between WGBH HD and KCTS HD, but it's another instance of Bell not being honest with its customers.

Looks like PBSHE and PBSHW will continue. As of today they are on two different transponders again.

819 PBSHE TP15
824 PBSHW TP26

In fact, PBSHE is all by his lonesome on TP15.

Thanks for checking up. Boy, they sure do move channels around those transponders a lot, don't they?
