jdw,
I get your point, but let's not forget than Gibernau tested on the GP8 last year at Mugello and he was very fast. Almost as fast as Stoner! Apparently neither Melandri nor Hayden can tame the beast, but I don't believe Stoner is the only one who can. From what I've read, it appears that the Ducati traction control is the root of the problem. The Ducati TC is the most sophisticated of all the systems out there, but it requires the rider to adopt a total no-rear-wheel-spin style. For some, (like Hayden, for example, who used to race dirt bikes and has a riding style that favors wheel spin), this is difficult. Stoner, on the other hand, has taken to it like a fish to water.
In any case, let's see what Bayliss can do. One thing is certain, he can't do any worse than Hayden! And while I agree with you that, (at least at this point), Ducati probably doesn't intent do replace Hayden with Bayliss, that could, (hopefully!), change quickly. Especially if Hayden continues to stink up the motogp circuits with last row, back-of-the-pack performances.
