The water in my goldfish tank is so terrible, I have cleaned almost 75% of the water at least 4 times already in these past weeks. I have cleaned all the decorations, turned off the light at night and now even during the day too, used a pebble vac to clean the pebbles, cleaned the glass, cleaned the filters, turned on the other filter, and even got a pleco!!! The water has BARELY gotten any better at all!!! Would it take out too much beneficial bacteria to turn on both filters? Because now... I don't know what to do. It is a 29 gallon tank with 2 goldfish and a pleco. I also put in algae drops and ph down. I did everything possible that I could think of and the tank is still so bad and the water is so green I haven't seen the back of the tank for months... literally! It is by the window but there is a shade always down. I never bring the shade up. In a week or two I will be re-arranging my room and move them away from the window. When I change the water it's greener than lime green even when I just clean the water!!! What can I do??

Even if you have the shade down, there is still enough UV light coming through to produce that amount of algae. I don't think that using two filters would remove to much of your beneficial bacteria, because it would still be filtered back into tank. Have you ever tried a water clarifier product? The liquid adheres to small particles of algae (or whatever is causing the grunge) and it makes it easier for your filter to suck up. It could also be a bacterical bloom, in that care you'd need to find a product that would remove the bacteria. Hope this helps!
