i have a 1988 honda xr200r that i took apart to repaint and replace some parts on the engine. now im having trouble getting the engine back in, but had no issue getting it out. ive tried putting it in about 5 times now and now i dont know what to do. each time i scratch more and more paint.

before you go any further check the frames geometry.
did you remove the mount from the engine or is that still bolted to it or the frame
You need to only have the top Cylinder head engine mount loosely bolted in and free to move about.
The lower frame to engine mount needs to be off BUT slid round the frame tube and tied up out of the way.
Once the engine is lifted in ( there is a huge amount of clearance as the frame was designed for a bigger engine) and attached to the top mount loosely then the lower mount can be mated up.
the engine needs to go in from the right hand side. IN~ UP~ LIFT and Rotate BACK. to mount it on the rear mounts.
IF you decide to do it as ADAM suggests.
1 remove wheels tank forks and swing arm from frame. I'nc rear shock
2 Lay engine on it's right ( clutch) side
3 Lift frame onto the engine from this side.
4 Slide mount bolts in from this side and bolt loosely in
5 tighten onlty once ALL cycle partshave been fitted.

NEVER EVER and I do mean EVER lay the frame on it's side and LOWER the engine into frame...
You can't control it and you WILL trap your fingers.
you always lower the lighter component onto the outside of the larger heavier one..

Some people who think they know don't arf talk some donkey!!!
