Having financial problems and my car tags are expired what should I do?

My roommate was laid off back in Sept. and they have been out of work since, so other than their unemployment I am the only one with income... We are also a month behind on rent along with everything else. I am so stressed out on what to do because their car tags are expired and basically do not have the money right now to change them. My mother's volvo is currently not running but her tags are still good... Could I borrow her tags or is it better to use the old ones until we've got the money to take care of the old tags?

get new tags or risk jail

either don't drive the expired car or risk a ticket. if you take the tags from another car that's a felony in most states.
