Having decompression surgery on Tuesday

Although I haven't spent a whole lot of time on this board, I want to say thanks to everyone for all the information I gathered to help out with my L4-L5 decompression/discectomy surgery this Tuesday. Also, I would appreciate your prayers! I'll be home Wednesday or Thursday and will let your know how it went when I can. I can't wait to get rid of the shooting pain down my left leg!
 
Brenda I want to wish you the best of luck with your surgery and a speedy recovery. You definitely will have my prayers for both.:angel: Try and spend a special day tomorrow if you can and when you feel up to it when you get home let us know how you are doing.

Brenda I am so glad that your surgery is over with and you are on the road to recovery. SounRAB like everything is going pretty much normal even though we all wish we were completely pain free out of surgery. Take care of yourself and don't over do and let us know how things are going.

I made it through the surgery!

Thank you so much for all of your thoughts and prayers - it really helped knowing that my frienRAB, family, and cyberfrienRAB were supporting me through this.

Overall, the surgery went well. The surgeon originally thought he would be doing an L4-L5 decompression/discectomy, but found a nasty bony growth he had to remove. He said he was amazed that it didn't show up on the MRI, and that it was likely causing a lot of my sciatic pain in my left leg. Just goes to show you that an MRI doesn't always show the full picture of what is going on and should only be considered one piece of the puzzle. I removed the dressing yesterday and took a shower for the first time (boy did that feel good!), and I discovered the incision is about 6-7 inches long! I was told it would be around 3 inches long, so I
 
Brenda, you had the same surgery I had 5.5 weeks ago. The absolute worst part was the 4 days in the hospital - I was a slow "drainer." You can do this but expect a lot of good days/bad days for the first several weeks at least. Very important that you stay as active as you can without overdoing it. Imperative that you walk daily. I also made a concerted effort to wean myself off the serious pain meRAB as soon as I could - I hate Vicodin, it was making me tired, loopy, constipated, etc. I am now just taking Tylenol over the counter. Bar any unforseen disaster, I hope to get back to work in a week or so.
