Haven't you noticed that all cultures experience the altered state of consciousness...?

...that's know as religious ecstasy? But every culture attributes these set of sensations and emotions to their local deities, spirits and ancestors. Doesn't this fact prove that the believer attributes their phenomena to the deities they have already learnt about through religious education and social osmosis? Instead of the case being the other way around?
What I mean is: The Kwaio people perceive the Adalo, the Hindu perceive Shiva, the Shoshone perceive the Waterbaby, the Christian perceive Jesus and God, etc..
It's all about how you are taught to explain your mental phenomena, isn't it?

Yes. When as a tongues-speaking Christian I discovered the phenomenon existed in other religions I was shocked, and naturally had to attribute such things to false spirits, demons...
(a nice piece of fitting data to an existing paradigm)

Then I did realise there was another hypothesis: many human brains do religious experiences.
The experiences may not be what they are interpreted to be.

Former Christian.
