...non smokers lack imagination? I work as a gardener at Durham University and my shed is always full of Dons and academics and they all smoke like troopers. I don't smoke but there company is fantastic.
From some of these answers it seems that non smokers are very agressive and they protest to much. Maybe they should start smoking?
 
We have more sense than to stick dirty needles in our bodies, or inhale illicit and (ILLEGAL) foreign substances through contaminated money notes my friend. I also live close to Durham City, but you will only find tab-ends in my shed.
 
very academic I smoked up until 3 years ago just some of my work record, Army, green assistant ( golf course )
betting shop manager, bus driver, chauffeur, shop manager,
16 years scrap yard foreman, head groundsman,
as you said most smokers (that you come into contact with)
but a lot of the not quite so academics have a puff to,

I smoke, have no artistic ability whatsoever and absolutely hated academia. Where does that leave me?

PS: I don't wear 'wife-beaters', don't own a pickup and don't have any bumper stickers on my car.

You're just like Obama. It's YOU that should've burned your throat on a jalapeno, not me. I never deserved such trauma.
 
Good for you!! LOL! Durham is close to home!!! Smoking DOES relieve stress. I would rather have a cigarette than take a bunch of pills! The affects of a cigarette happens immediately, where the damn pills don't do anything but make me feel bad! I think more clearly when I smoke! More relaxed, and I really don't give a damn if people think I stink!!! You know something love! Seeing as you are actually inhaling all those Don's second hand smoke! You will find you are not only absorbing nicotine, but knowledge as well!!!!! AND probably live longer! My Dad was a 40 cigarette smoker a day, he outlived all his doctors and lived until he was 92!! Happy inhaling!!
 
Academics "smoke" because they are teaching (couldn't get a job in the real world) so they are assigned the duty of baby sitting high school / college "kids". They seriously want to strangle the little buggers but don't want to go jail..so they smoke.
