Have you met the new Message Board Personality, the Atheist who argues religious points?

I have run into half a dozen of these. I would think the only thing an atheist would say about religion would be that he thought it absurd and it doesn't exist. That I can understand. Instead I keep running into these people who want to have their cake and eat it too. They say they are an atheist, and then make all sorts of religious arguments why your particular religion is the wrong one. I most often encounter these personalities like this: I mention I am Catholic, and I then get the 'Catholics are living in darkness, your church is the Whore of Babylon, and the Pope is the Antichrist, and by the way, I don't believe in God." And I go "Huh?" If you don't believe in God, why would you hate one branch of Christianity more than another? That makes no sense to me. One particular guy on a message board I know will argue up one side and down the other that confessing your sins to a priest is anti Christian. And yet he affirms he is a complete atheist. I tell him that if he is an atheist, he has no business arguing about religion at all. But this makes no impact on him.
I think you miss the point. If you are an atheist, you are spiritually DEAD and a spiritually DEAD person CANNOT experience religion in any meaningful way. It's like lecturing about sex, if you have been impotent your entire life, and unable to achieve orgasm.

You make an excellent point , but the slippery mouthed atheists will refute it one way or another. Because one excuse is good as another.

Just because we don't believe in your god, doesn't mean we don't know anything about your particular religion.

And if I follow your logic, you have no business arguing about atheism, since you are religious.

I'm an atheist, but I'm also a former religion studies major. I've spent a lot of time over the years researching many different religions, trying to find one in which I could believe. I failed in that search (thought I had found it with Presbyterianism once, even considered becoming a minister, but ultimately rejected that along with the rest.) The reason I'm here and the reason I feel I can weigh in on religious issues is that I have studied religion academically. I've read the Bible and I've also read a lot of theology, and I answer the questions that I think I'm qualified to answer, based on my knowledge. I try to keep my answers academic in nature, and I'm not interested in declaring Catholics to be the Antichrist or some such other nonsense. I just enjoy being able to contribute my knowledge in a way that others may find helpful. It makes me think that all my study of religion wasn't just a waste of time.

I'm kind of a Catholic atheist, lol. But I admit it. I like to correct people who have wrong understandings about things, even if the things themselves are mythical.

To me it's like.....well, let's say I like Star Trek but I know it's fiction. And I am on a forum and someone says "But Spock is from Mars and has red skin!"

If I point out that no, Spock is from Vulcan and has green skin, it doesn't mean I really believe there is a Vulcan and green skinned people live there, it just means......well it just means I'm a compulsive nerd. There, I said it, are you happy?

I post on R&S because I am a compulsive nerd!
