Have you ever tried to return a book to a bookstore from which you didn't buy it?

I'm just going through my library, and I have some old books which I've never read. They're in mint condition, like they've never been read before. If I try to return it to a bookstore (say, Borders), do you think they'll accept it? Obviously, I didn't buy it from Borders nor do I have a (gift) receipt.

Why not read them? Or have a garage sale, new books usually sell quickly.

No I have not done that because I try to follow the Commandants. Thou shalt not steal is one of them.
