I was thinking about this last night after someone asked a question about starting a business. I think about business everyday actually. ( I have an entrepreneurial brain.)
Consignment. It's not very glamourous, but what a great way to move into retail. Very little money down. Only the rent for the space really. Retail space is so cheap right now.
When my kids were little I used to cloth them from this one children's consignment shop. High end stuff for a quarter of the cost. This store had everything from maternity clothing, furniture, toys, etc.....they even rented out some of this stuff to people that had guests coming into town....etc.
Another type of consignment I used quite often was furniture. I did not have new furniture in my home for years and years. I always scanned the used furniture stores when my kids were young especially.
Another consignment idea is art. You can consign the art from local artist. Stained glass, jewelry, pottery, floral, tee shirts, quilts, etc....I am a stained glass artist and this is how I sold most of my pieces when I first started out. Go to local craft fairs and check them out. Many starving artists would give anything to have their art placed in a shop.
The return on consignment is usually 50/50, although I've seen it as high as 60/40. Also, the nice thing about consignment is that people seek you out when looking specifically for used items. Not so much an art type of consignment, but the furniture and clothing for sure. Also, if it fails you are not out a whole bunch of cash, just the rental money really.
I just thought I'd share some ideas. Sorry for the rant. I hope this gives at least one of you a good idea.
