Have you ever read a book that was SO "not you"-- or very different from your...

Part of what I love about books is the opportunity to experience something foreign to me. Different countries, different customs, different ways of thought, different experiences.

I guess I don't understand why someone would read about characters who are just like them. I'm already pretty familiar with me, I want to see someone different.

In fact I have yet to read a story I identify with!

Oh, wait! I think I WAS Scarlett O'Hara in my previous birth...but in this, I'm more like Melanie :) (or so I think!)

Sure, I'll read pretty much anything from Victorian adventures, to modern-day Austrailian high school dramas. I think we often read about places and characters that don't relate to us in any way because the exotic and unknown is exciting. It's a kind of escape. But we also like characters we can relate to and places we know because it brings glamour to our own lives that someone thought something simlilar to what we go through every day was worth writing down in a novel.

...personality/ lifestyle? When I was a kid, I couldn't get enough of Russian romantic fiction,
(written in English). I loved the history, the clandestine trysts, and
the beautifully described lush vistas, or wardrobes-- none of which
a kid in my environment could relate to, just dream.

Oh, but I loved those cheap, and dime-a-dozen tales!

I loved reading historical romance, mostly Beatrice Small and her Scotsmen and Irishmen. Then I found Teresa Medieros who wrote Time Travel romance and I started reading those for awhile. I stumbled on one about the Irish faeries of the Tuatha de Dannan and started searching for the Paranormal romances. I like to read about Succubi, Vampire Soccer Moms, Werewolves, Nephilim, Nereids, Mermaids, Shaman, Faeries and other otherworldly creatures. Of course I'm nothing like them but it is fun to read. An escape from the mundane.

you know? yes. I was OBSESSED with that book where the red fern grows but it was opposite of my life in every way. I guess that just goes to show that no matter the setting, the themes of some books are universal, and you can learn to understand the rest.
