...ignored the air quotes? have you ever been in a situation where you were talking about something that is not word-for-word true, but is kind of true or tends to be true, so you used air quotes when describing that thing, and the people are talking to ignore the air quotes you have used to describe that thing you were talkng about and instead ask you directly about that thing you were not even meaning to be direct about?

Why do people ignore the air quotes on a word when for all they know the person using the air quotes means every quote?

example: [by the way, I am not talking about a secret. this is just an example]

You are talking about something being a "secret.". A person will just ignore the quotes and go ahead and ask you what the secret is, when yourself was not trying to talking about a secret, rather something that is like a secret or private for certain people to hear about only.

Why do people ignore air quotes used for a word?
