Have to change plan for new phone?

I was told by a Verizon rep over the phone that I would have to change my current plan to get a new phone...She says all Verizon phones now offered for sell requires me to have a Verizon plan..I was an Alltel customer that got switched over with the merger..

My plan now has 900 minutes,free m2m,and 10 Friends and Family(previously My Circle)...I have 2 lines and pay 59.99 plus 9.99 for the other line,total 69.98...

The Verizon plan with the same price point offers 700 minutes and NO Friends and Family...Clearly I would be getting way less for the same price..
Next step up is 1400 minutes with the 10 Family and Friends for 20 bucks more at 89.99..Overkill for my use..So you see,I would like to keep my current plan if all possible..

I'm I getting lied to here on the new phones only working with a new plan??..Anyone else had this problem??..

BTW,it's just a regular phone I'm looking at,not something that requires a data plan..

Just an update..The reps on the phone either didn't know what they heck they were talking about or being dishonest..Either way,I went to my local Verizon store and updated my phone without having to change plans..

Thank goodness..Other wise I would have dropped em like a hot potato out of principle alone..

You might want to check your plan features and pricing at http://vzw.com/myverizon.

There is NO way to get a Verizon Wireless device, activate it, and keep your old Alltel plan. It's just not possible.

Not only are you required to change plans (to a compatible Verizon one) you are responsible for any early termination fees you may have...even if you choose to switch to Verizon (from Alltel plans). If you got the phone with an Alltel upgrade, you will need to change your plan and get a Verizon device...but no early termination fee required.

Really??..I walked into the Verizon store and asked the rep which phones would work on my current plan(the same plan I've had for years and carried over from Alltel)...I told him over and over that I didn't want to change my plan..He said that all would work except a few in which I would have to have a data plan..

I picked up the Alias 2 and on checkout must of asked over him a dozen.."So nothing will change right"?..He assured me no..Everything is the same just got a 2 year contract since it's a new phone..I got his card and out the door I went..

I logged on to my Verizon account and it still shows the same plan name and cost..Family National Freedom 900..10 Friends and Family...59.99 plus 9.99 for extra line..So I'm a happy camper..The reps on the phone(3 different ones) straight up told me that I couldn't get a new phone without changing my plan over..My first post tells the difference in cost and features between the two..

I just suggest you watch VERY carefully.

Even current Verizon customers on older plans have to change their plan to get a new phone.

For example, Verizon Wireless used to offer a plan called America's Choice Plan. It basically contains the same features of every type of plan ever offered. Then Verizon went and changed the plans to a Nationwide Plan. The only difference between the two is mobile web is included free (but you pay for per megabyte) on the Nationwide. When Verizon made this change, all new phones released when the Nationwide came out could ONLY be activated on the Nationwide...they FORCED you to change to upgrade.

It doesn't make since why they'd allow you to keep your plan...when they're even making native customers change.

Ok ya got me nervous now,but thanks for the heads up..I will be watching them like a hawk...If they do anything negative I will let it be known in full detail..I HATE being lied to..And right to my face!!...But for now I'll be calm and just hope everything will be cool..

This is not unheard of, wireless providers will sometimes make exemptions at their own discretion, especially if you got transfer over from a merger.
