Greg Louganis, Olympic diver, for one. Most "out" gay athletes are amateurs/Olympians or individual sports like golf or tennis, rather than team sports. Probably being openly gay would be an impediment to product endorsements for professionals, not to mention lockerroom taunting, whereas amateurs tend to be in a liberal college setting.
 
John Amaechi who was the first openly gay NBA player to come out.
