have a06 dodge ram 1500 hemi. the tach just stopped working. what r possible causes?

at 55 mph, the tach reads 600 rpm then it jumps 2 1800 rpm i don't want to take it to the dealer if it's something simple at idle there is no readng at all. Any help would be appreciated THANKS
