Have a pair of hard leather soled tango shoes. Need to refurbish.?

The leather has been worn down and now almost resembles suede. How can I refurbish them? I want the slippiness back. I visited a cobbler about getting a new half sole put on, but he wanted to charge me $38 for it. That's more than I want to pay. Any other thoughts? Anyone every tried "liquid leather" on shoe soles?
