Been running great these past few years and maintaining it. just within these last few weeks it just started running weird. my husband cant figure it out and then the check engine light came on and it said missed fire in first cylinder which means the spark plugs, so we changed that, and it still says that, should we go get the truck looked at or just let it go down the hill???? we dont have money to get a new vechile, but i want to know what I should do since my husband doesnt know what is wrong, he hasnt worked on cars in about 3 years..someone help me out

A miss fire in cylinder 1 and you replaced the plug, eliminating it as a possibility. Now you must check further - plug wire, cap, fuel injector or connector?
I have a 2000 with 187,000 miles - and I won't trade it 'till it dies, and that seems unlikely in the near future.

Did you try changing the spark plug wires themselves? If the spark plug wiring harness is bad, that's the cause of your miss fire. And your Explorer is about the age that wiring starts to go just from heat from the engine and exposure to the elements.

If the vehicle has been well maintained, it's got more miles in it. I'd try swapping out the plug wires with a new set and see what happens from there.
