Sounds like you need some repairs.
If I remember correctly, there is a shift "modulator" that operates on engine vacuum on the transmission that controls the automatic part of the shifting. It is externally mounted, BUT there may also be internal part problems, or the external hose may be bad as well.
MOST shops will not charge to look at it for you and determine the problem as long as they don't need to open the transmission.
