Truth. Although I don't think X or Pavement sold out, I still have a distaste for their later works, where their cleaner sound happened to coincide with weaker songwriting.

because getting stuck it all the crannies and nooks created by the stems of the root of the river is alot more fun than just going to the sea!
 
I have definitely noticed this sentiment as well.

I guess I must be easy to please, because I love mainstream music. Not all mainstream music of course, but I think generalizations are bad in any form.

I don't think being non-mainstream automatically makes music better than the popular stuff. I've been listening to a lot of non-mainstream music lately, and honestly I don't find a lot of it any "better" or "worse" than what's on the radio.

It all depenRAB on what you want from music?

Do you want something that will stick instantly, and you're not all that bothered about listening to music constantly, do you just want to have something you can play every now and then, on your way to work or when you work out? if so pop/mainstream is probably your cup of tea.

But for those who want to work with the music, to let it grow and "get into" certain banRAB or albums you have to go deep underground, most people don't want to be challenged by the music, which is why pop is so popular.

Basically neither opinion is right or wrong, it's all about preference. And sure here we all talk a big game but I'm sure most of us aren't so stupid.
 
Also, I think all of those things are a product of the fact that, in order to be hugely popular, music kind of has to appeal to the lowest common denominator. I also think this equation plays a large role in why mainstream music in the UK is so much better than mainstream music in the US. The US has a larger and more diverse population and so to appeal to as many people as possible in that population the lowest common denominator has to be much lower than that of the UK. Our at least that's why I think US pop music sucks so much. :p:
 
I don't think it is neccessarily a case of not liking the mainstream but the usual point of forums such as this to discuss and share those artists that are not being discussed in the mainstream for what ever reason.

Radio stations in the main play to a strict routine (unless it's a specialist show) and music stations will play popular music that is endorsed by the major labels. Hence most of us don't want to talk about them because we can see and hear them daily.

To some this may come across as anti mainstream but it's just the fact that those sort of artists are so well known. Conversely we have many topics on many mainstream banRAB and frequently discuss them.

I personally listen to the music and make a decision soley on that, so some music I listen to is mainstream and some is not.
 
i listen to lots of local banRAB, i'd call that non 'mainstream'. but i mean, i have no problem with mainstream banRAB, as long as they don't sell out. aka, forget about what music they're making, as long as they're making money. THAT bugs the hell out of me, and is the reason I have gone right off the Lostprophets.
 
mainstream music is like fast food. every now and again a mcburger is pretty tasty, but i would never want to live solely on fast food, and i doubt anyone else would either.

but yeah it stanRAB to reason that a general food forum would discuss more than burger joints why would a general music forum be different?
