Has this been the best summer of films ever?

There's too many sequels. Looking at most of what's been released, there won't be much that goes down in the 'greatest films of all time' list, will there?

It's all well and good if you look sequels and big-budget crowd pleasers.
 
I saw Surfs Up last week, and so far that's the best film I've seen. I knew nothing about the film before I went, but loved every minute of it.
 
in my opinion this has been one of the most disappointing summers for big budget movies, there have been so many films that, on paper sound awesome but when they reached the big screen something went wrong big time.

anyway, here are my opinions (contains spoilers):

Spiderman 3- Too many baddies, too much Dawsons Creek style soap opera drama. Venom could have been classic but instead they conveniently stick him in at the end as basically a subplot which is overshadowed by Peter Parkers boring love life.

Pirates 3- Am i the only person who really hates this self indulgent mess of a franchise?? I certianly think I am the only person who finRAB 'witty jack' annoying and orlando and keira extremely bland. Yeah there are some great action scenes and special effects but it is completely ruined by the fact that everytime the film gets going the writers feel the need to shove several 'hilarious' scenes down our throats.

die hard 4- why did they turn a classic old school action movie into a techno thriller? wasn't 'The Net' bad enough?

Simpsons- One of the better movies but it could have easily been done as a double episode on TV. still funny though.

Transformers- stick with the cartoon original as you will see a lot more of the actual transformers. This had way too many pointless human characters (what was the point in Anthony Andersons character?), every movie cliche known to man (e.g the tearful reunion between the solder and his wife, the geek who gets the girl, etc). It also reminded me of way better films (there were bits of terminator, predator, the matrix..even the music from Kill Bill)

Fantastic four/silver surfer- better than i expected but it still had its faults and they really need to sort out the dr doom character. less of a summer film and more the kind of thing i expect to see feb/march time (if that makes any sense)

harry potter-well made, but totally baffling if you dont know the books.

shrek 3-havent seen it yet but i cannot get excited about a film that features justin timberlake.

grindhouse- where is it?? what could have been the most interesting film of the summer has been split in two and put back to september just because Miramax think UK audiences wont 'get it'

I say roll on 2008 and i hope that Batman:TDK, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, Speed racer, mummy 3 and indiana jones 4 will be a improvement over this years efforts.

See I thought that aswell but most of the reviews I've read / heard from non-readers understood it fine.
 
Well, I've just returned from the cinema, and I'm pleased to announce that my prediction was correct.
It was [EXTREMELYLARGEFONT]FANTASTIC![/EXTREMELYLARGEFONT].
It had so much energy. It had all the subversive humour of the original. It had a fat John Travolta, Christopher Walken, fabulous songs, John Water's great storyline... but I couldn't help feeling a bit sad throughout because it reminded me of Divine's untimely death just after the premier of the original film. It would have been nice for him to have seen what an iconic film it's become.
Three Cheers for John Waters' masterpiece and the great musical remake!

I loved Transformers too. It started as a serious and quite scary film - which was very well done, and then became a comedy, which was also very well done. One of the few films that made me laugh out loud a few times in the cinema.
 
On paper, Pirates... has everything I want - humour, action, love interest, period costumes, Johnny Depp - but it's never worked for me. The 'funny' action scenes go on for far too long (what on earth was with that spinning wheel thing in the second? went on for a bloody eternity) and the storylines are daft.
 
I think they make the reasonable assumption that everyone has read the books. I haven't read any so I find the films slightly difficult to follow, but I still enjoyed them.
 
ive seen Pirates 3, HP5, and Hairspray this year

pirates although i was really looking forward to it it wasn't my faveorite as it was too long and the plot got more complicated !! having said that though the final battle was amazing and it was a shock to how things panned out at the end eg. will

HP5- loved it !!! Daniel radcliffe mymy hes grown up !!! all the acting had improved and was enjoyable to watch again i liked the bit at the ministry !! i can see why it would be slighty complicated to follow if you havent read the books but i think that the stuff they leave out is well done as its still easy to follow but the people who have read the books it would be easy to know why a scene was done that way or whatever !! :):)

Hairspray !! IMO THE BEST MOVIE THIS YEAR!!!!! have seen it 3 times and still doesn't get boring !! always listen to the soundtrack :D i loved it !! every member of this cast was fantastic. if there was to be one bit i didn't like as much it would be ` timeless to me` just cause its quite long ! Nikki Blonsky was born for this role !! shes brilliant you really want her to come out on top and i end up disliking Amber and Velma too - it means there doing something right !!
Link was perfectly cast !! i dont think there could of been a better teen star that would of done him Justice like Zac Efron did !! and him being majorly crush-worthy is a plus !! :p Amanda Bynes is hilarious and Elijah Kelley is a great discovery too !!

all in all a great movie that will make you want to sing and dance in the aisles and you'll come out with the songs stuck in your head and feeling happy and joyful (which is what i wanna feel when i come out of a cinema !! )

can't wait for HSM2 to premiere over here and then ill of seen the 4 movies that i wanted to this year !!

i can't say that 2008 looks that good for me as theres been some great movies out this year and it will be hard to beat. BUT i will be paying to see Gabi, Troy, Sharpay, Ryan, Chad and Taylor on the big screen !!
 
The figures are in and financially at least Summer 2007 has been the most lucrative ever with box-office takings in N America passing $4 billion for the first time (beating the previous record year - 2004).

However, in terms of raw numbers of tickets sold over the summer, 2007 is a lowly 6th on the all time list. 2002 is the clear leader here - the summer of Spider Man 2, SW Ep 2, Signs, Austin Powers 3, Sum Of All Fears and a few more. Makes you wonder why Hollywood is so obsessed with the box-office results. A fair comparison would be raw ticket numbers or a ratio of film budget to takings. I've only seen three this summer

Pirates of the Caribbean At World's End was a complete dissappointment. While Visually it is stunning in almost all respects it was a letdown which did not really end either - leaving it on a cliffhanger as in Will now captain of the Flying Dutchman and how are they getting out of that one!

Transformers I enjoyed but found the comedy of the smaller Decepticon (whose name slips my mind) seem to jar with the rest of the film which was typical Michael Bay

Of all of them I enjoyed Die Hard the most. Mind you I thought technically it was cobblers! But for junkie entertainment it hit the spot.

I will probably see Bourne on DVD - I've got the first two on DVD and can then complete the set.
