Has the advancement of guns improved us in war?

Has guns lowered the amount of death in war? or has it increased it?
Has it helped improve war or were we better off in the swords/shields/spears age?

The concept of "improved" is tough to fathom. It can mean many things. Guns have made the killing easier and less personal. Smashing a persons skull with an axe or gutting them with a sword is about as personal as one can get and requires great personal skill and courage. Shooting an enemy from a distance requires little of the same quality of bravery. There is more killing done by bombs and artillery than soldiers. The gun made it easier but not more or less common.
