Has civilization been such a good thing for humans (or for the rest of life on...

...earth for that matter)? When humans lived as hunter-gatherers, our diet was largely protein, supplemented by berries, herbs and roots etc. After the discovery of agriculture, our diet became largely carbs, in the form of grains which had never eaten before or only very little. Protein became a rare treat, humans shrank from a hunter-gatherer average height of 5' 10" down to an average height of 5' 2", which many world populations have still not regained.

Population increased, land could support many more farmers than gatherers. Female gatherers only reproduced after the previous kid could keep up, farmers were not limited in such a way. Large populations bred diseases and plagues, killing unkown millions to date.

Environmental destruction (which only increases with our technology) followed, along with the extinction and/or displacement of almost every animal in contact with humans.

Large populations also bred something possibly even more deadly than the plauges: organized religion. Enough said about that.

Natural selection ensured progressive adaptation. Hunter gatherers had to be physically and mentally fit; the group would not be able to support a mentally or physically handicapped member, they would not live to reproduce their defective genes.

They had to be intelligent, memorize the routines, habits and weaknesses of hundreds of animals, be able to hunt cooperatively, be a walking dictionary of all the plants and herbs in their area, etc.

A tribe with genetic or other health problems would die out, it's territory taken over by another, more fit to survive tribe.

Today, we want everyone to survive and reproduce, how crazy is that? Emphasize safety, wear a helmet, seatbelt etc. instead of just letting their inferior intelligence exit our gene pool. Smoking, drugs , mentally and physically handicapped people reproducing and creating normal appearing children who will reproduce with yours or mine.

Was Darwin right when he said that modern medicine would prove to be the downfall of mankind? Allowing the sickly to live and reproduce?

We need population control and a more righteous society.
When we decide that true religion or belief in God does not mean we can kill others who do not believe like us we will then be civilized.

It's not the civilization, it's the way we handle the civilization. IF it weren't for the destruction for environment, lack of health, rude people and corporate greed then it wouldn't be a bad thing.
