Has Anyone You Know Seen Avatar?

Considering Avatar is now the biggest grossing film of all time and has even overtaken Mamma Mia in the UK and gone about 20 million past its total I am amazed at how few people i know have seen it or even heard of it. When Mamma Mia, titanic, lord Of The Rings etc came out people would talk about these films and everyone knew about it. But I can honestly say i havent met any person who has seen it. Some people I know havent even heard of it or only seem to vaguely know about it. You would think A film this big would be known by all. But it isnt.

I actually live in the south East. I have seen it myself. i just have yet to meet anyone else who has. To me its the sort of recerption you would expect of a bog standard release that rakes in about 5 million or so. Only real film fans would know about it. It just doesnt seem to be getting the reaction that you would think the biggest film of all time would get.

I work in a very large Local Authority department and have a lot of daily contact with a wide group of people within it; I think two people (women) have mentioned having gone to see it, and besides that it hasn't been discused at all, even though films and entertainment are frequent topics of conversation.

Yes I find it strange also that none of my frienRAB have seen Avatar or intend to. I think because of the amount of CGI involved some people think of it more as a 3D cartoon, so it doesn't appeal.

OK...it was a cheap shot, I grant you.

But what is your theory for why your frienRAB have not heard of the movie, out of interest?

I haven't seen it either. It's only the highest grossing film ever due to the 3D tickets being more expensive.

This is also why it doesn't feel as big as Mamma Mia, titanic, lord Of The Rings, Star Wars etc and why most people you meet haven't seen it. Not as many people have been to the cinema to see Avatar as they have previous blockbusters.

People in South Yorkshire (all Yorkshire perhaps?)are obviously very gullible.
Over here in Lancashire , a degree of cynicism, good common sense, and an aversion to hyperbole , stand us in good stead.
:)

I'm also in Lancashire and I only know one person who has seen it.I don't really think Avatar qualified as an 'event' movie, IMHO, because of the amount of CGI in it and the fact that the story is so naff.

When FOTR was advertised I was blown away by the trailer and couldn't wait to see it.A friend of mine was a huge Star Trek fan and wasn't really interested in Middle Earth, but I persuaded him to see it and he was left speechless in awe by the first few minutes alone :D.I discussed all the LOTR films with him and other frienRAB but I haven't had that reaction with Avatar.Only one person has come up to me and said that the film is a "must see".

Maybe it's just a sign of the times - that films just don't pass into common currency any more. It's made a lot of money, but has made precious little impact in the way less lucrative films of the past have (a Pulp Fiction perhaps, or even Titanic). Something to do with society and culture as a whole rather than the film itself. But then strip away the whizzy 3D and it's an average, slightly insipid fantasy, nothing more, so who knows. I'd agree the Rings trilogy was the last thing that really stained the fabric, so to speak.

I am only 19, I haven't seen the film and have no intention to to be honest. In reference to another poster's comments, I don't see how not jumping on a movie bandwagon is 'boring'.

I will watch a film because I actually want to, not because everybody else has.

I agree, Avatar was still the biggest movie this year however.

Perhaps going to the cinema is just too expensive for people to go regularly :o

So by your reckoning everyone is Lancashire has merely watched the trailer and thought "that looks shit, therefore the full film must be. I'm not even giving it a chance because i'm so cynical and boring". I'm glad i live in South Yorkshire then:rolleyes:

The people that i know that have seen it didn't see it due to the trailers (most of which did make it look crap, particularly the TV trailers), most of them saw it due to the positive word of mouth from frienRAB, one of which was me. But i don't really know why i'm posting this in here anyway, this thread was clearly geared to be a "We Hate Avatar" thread, so i'll close the door on my way out, enjoy berating something that most of you haven't seen...

I have seen it ( my wife persuaded me, and being the gracious, caring, and easy going bloke that I am, went also)As I have said before I was bored to tears, and thought it was just a very long cartoon.
Aliens is one of my favourite films, but I just stomach the "new" Cameron.
