it.? I picked this topic:

-Discuss the appropriateness and effectiveness of the author using Death as the narrator in the novel. How does Death's perspective on human behavior enhance the story of Liesel and the other characters?

I have a few points on what to write, I just don't know how to start it because we can't retell the story or anything like that (my teacher said she'd just throw the essay away if we do). And can I have some help on other points as well? It has to be 500-600 words, but I don't see how I can make it that long unless I BS it (which I probably will).

Thanks!

Well, maybe you should start it out with something eye-grabbing or what the previous answerer said. Maybe you could start out with describing the book in a nutshell, with a drip of figurative language like Markus Zusak used throughout the book. Here's a quote that might help, from the author himself: "I liked the idea of having a gem on every page." Instead of just focusing on the general war itself, try to veer over to the other themes - the beauty and brutality of humanity, irony, friendship (such as Rudy's and Liesel's or Liesel's and Max's), death, books, and how you can relate each theme to the subject. And also how the author used foreshadowing and used metaphors to set the mood....hope this helped. I loved The Book Thief - it was the literary highlight of my year.
